Working with an agency is an exciting and rewarding decision: you’re able to tap into a wealth of knowledge, scale up your business offering and utilise an abundance of expertise. However choosing the right agency can often feel disconcerting and overwhelming. You need a partner that has your best interests at heart, the passion to help you succeed and the reliability to stand alongside you at every step of the way.
Our Digital Producer Alice has listed her top 3 most important criteria to look out for when choosing an agency to become an extension of your team.
- A well oiled creative machine
It’s no secret that working with an agency opens many doors: they can produce work faster, be flexible in their approach and can scale up or down quickly to match your needs. However, finding an agency which values creativity and efficiency can be tricky. The most supportive and productive agencies understand that things change. They can be proactive and reactive and work with you to ensure your goals and deadlines are constantly aligned.
Having access to their project managers, account managers and producers is an invaluable asset. These individuals are not only experts in the industry but they have the emotional intelligence and agility to truly listen and collaborate with you along the way. It’s essential to trust that the creative process is supported by a well oiled operational structure. As we all know, if timelines start to slip and are ineffectively managed it has a knock-on effect on the whole team and overall project.
An excellent operational team will not only effectively manage your production process through to delivery but they’ll ensure that you have access to the right individuals at the right time. For example, if you have a creative query you’ll be able to discuss it with the Head of Design and/or the Designers, or if you have a technical query you’ll be able to discuss it with the Technical Lead and/or the Developers. An effective operational team should act as the first point of contact, streamlining communications and utilising the experienced team to help solve your challenges.
- No B***S*** please
We’ve most likely all been there before; been let down by a provider last minute, felt that we’ve been swindled into paying more for less or had high expectations which just weren’t met. Which is why trusting a new agency to support your offering and/or growth, can sometimes feel daunting.
So instead, make sure that you trust the people first.
No one can be expected to be confident with an agency without having transparent conversations around deadlines, capabilities, spillages, financials …. the list goes on. Joining forces with an agency who respect your time, respect your work and most importantly respect you, will eradicate any dishonest B***S***.
Agencies who value integrity over the price tag of your business, are the companies who will nurture your professional relationship, becoming an invaluable asset to your team. Then, once you trust that they have your best interest at heart, you’ll be able to focus on what really matters – collaborating to produce incredible work!
- Collective intelligence and collaboration
Another key benefit of working with an agency, which is often highlighted, is that you’ll have access to a breadth of expertise and a far broader skill base. This is undoubtedly a huge asset and shouldn’t be overlooked. However we think this should go one step further.
A truly collaborative partnership will flourish best when that pool of knowledge is shared. In doing so, an agency can bring a welcomed infusion of fresh ideas whilst also raising the bar for quality and consistency.
But, this isn’t always an easy ask. People and agencies can often be reluctant to share their knowledge, in the fear that they’ll become redundant if their secrets are known. The answer – continual innovation and development. The most creative and inspiring agencies are the ones who continually push boundaries, value curiosity to bring fresh insights and innovation, and most importantly, utilise their pool of knowledge to expertly advise you.
Often these agencies are specialists within one or more specific industries or practices. For example, our agency Spicerack specialises in the amalgamation of technology and creativity. Having spent over a decade working with a variety of well-known brands designing and executing websites, digital campaigns, UX design and app development, we’ve become experts in crafting engaging digital experiences. Our experience enables us to speak the same language as our clients, understand and appreciate the challenges, and be fully up to speed with the agility and flexibility needed to manage complex projects.
